Having initially decided we didn’t want to do any major construction work on the house until next year, our plans have changed.
We need to keep a bathroom going over winter. Our initial plan was to use the outhouse as a bathroom; it already has a wood-fired boiler, shower and running water. Unfortunately, we think that winter might be cold enough to freeze the water pipes in the outhouse; it doesn’t look like it’s been used for winter, there’s not enough draft-proofing and it’s got thin cob walls.
So, this means we need to either have no bathroom for about three months (nasty), convert one of the inside bedrooms to a bathroom (too much work) or renovate the outhouse so it’s winter-proof. We’ve decided on the latter.
To do all this we need to firstly remove the tatty ceiling and a dodgy internal wall, insulate and line the external walls, and tart it all up a bit. The ceiling void is full of rats, so needs careful removal!

We will post updates as the project continues!
Oh my goodness Joe, you MUST be careful as I’m sure you know about the dangers of rat’s urine. You guys are so brave – it’s one hell of a project.
