Chickens in the house!

New arrivals!

Posted on 15 December 201424 December 2014

We got chickens!!!

Some friends of ours have had to return to the UK and asked us if we wanted their chickens. Naturally we said yes, so we now have five hens, all still laying and they are lovely birds. They’re very used to being handled, interested in everything we do, and they seem to have settled in very quickly.

Before they arrived I spent some time re-plastering the inside of their coop to make it a bit more comfortable for them, and repaired some of the doors to make them pine-marten proof.

This has meant that I’ve spend a few days installing new electric system to the outbuildings, so now we have a new fusebox, mains supply and lighting to the chicken run, which has been really useful when the pesky birds don’t want to go to bed at night.

We are also looking after their dog, Wally, until they get back. He’s an old dog, and a bit short sighted and with very selective hearing, but he’s a lovable fellow, even if he does chase the cat when it looks at his food funny.

Hi Irina, it’s not too bad at the moment, we’ve coped quite well I think, but it’s only been down to -16C here so far. We’re certainly looking forward to spring and summer!
