Not what I envisioned

Posted on 31 January 201517 February 2015

One of the reasons we chose to live in Bulgaria was the wildlife. We haven’t had much time to see much of it yet but I look forward to when we can go out and hopefully see some of the animals we have around us. We had otters where we lived in the UK and enjoyed our time watching them and hope to do the same here.

Well I have now seen my first otter but not as I expected. Stephan called round, he was quite excited to show me what he had in the car but imagine my surprise when he produced an otter that he had just shot! I have nothing against hunting it if you are going to eat it, but I saw this as hunting for the heck of it and was quite shocked, until he explained he had shot it at a local fishing lake where the owners stock it with fish so people can go fishing; this is their livelihood and an otter can have a devastating effect on their fish stocks. He also told us he can sell the pelt which will be made into clothing, so although it was sad to see such a lovely animal dead  I can console myself that at least it is not going to waste.

sad , but I guess needed , pity they could not have caught it humanly and taken it elsewhere , but I guess that is a bit difficult

Well, you will have to accept that many Bulgarians are hunters, and some kill just about anything that moves, if they can get away with it !! Luckily there are quite strict hunting regulations in Bulgaria ! But most Bulgarians are not respectless to nature, absolutly not ! They just have a different wiew ! And are used to abundance from the nature !!

OH no! It could have been trapped and moved, but with such a plentiful supply of fish, I suppose it would have been back. such difficult times with cultural changes :~(
