We’ve had a busy week in the garden, the sun has been shining and we’ve all been topping up our tans. This doesn’t mean we’ve been laying around on sun loungers ( I wish) no we’ve all been hard at it getting our seedlings and seeds in. The benefits of having 2 gardens allows us to grow crops for the live-stock at the other house as those plants will hopefully need less maintenance, so we are growing mainly corn for the chickens over there. We found an old hand plough/drill in one of the barns so decided to use that to plant the corn.
We have now also planted potatoes, broad beans, Climbing beans, peas, tomatoes , peppers, radish, lettuce, spinach, courgettes, butter-nut squash, corn, okra, beetroot, parsnip, carrot, Jerusalem artichoke, cabbages, broccoli and cauliflower. Along with the main garden we have also completed a couple of herb patches near to the house and now hopefully have a selection of herbs going ready for the summer.
The hugelkultur has been planted up with squashes to see how that goes and when the tomatoes are ready to come out from underneath the cloches we’ll put some of them in as well. Some of the beds we have covered with straw and some with rotted sheep muck just to see if these beds retain moisture and get less weeds than the other uncovered ones.
The fruit trees have all sprung into life and are now full of blossom so we are hoping the work we put into pruning and feeding them last year is going to pay off with a good crop in autumn.
What a delight when Spring finally takes hold and bursts through! Wow! That’s a lot of seeds. Heavy maintenance but what a crop! !! And ‘chucks’ too. Lovely!!
Sounds like hard work! We are doing much the same here in Cumbria (planting seeds etc) and its been nice and sunny for a few days! But our fruit trees are not in blossom yet, we made 5 gallons of lovely cider last year with our apples so hope to make even more this year. Bulgaria and your place sound really nice and your posts are very interesting.

Mmmm, cider, there are a few people in the village who make loads, so we’re hoping to give it a go.
