Repairing the roof

Julie inspecting the roof

One of our most important tasks before winter comes is making sure the roof is water-tight. We’ve had a builder friend inspect it and he says the only thing that really needs doing is re-bedding the ridge tiles. Neither me or Julie are happy working up on the roof, so we’ve employed a builder to come and do it for us. Fantastic views from the roof though, it’s making us think of loft spaces and attic rooms!

Watch yourself up there Julie, but if the view is THAT good, an attic room sounds like a great place to be!

Can see the ridge tiles adrift, but the rest looks OK, in fact very good. Have you checked the bearers in the roof space for signs of termites, wood rot etc? The tiles look mighty heavy and with the weight of snow on top….. Hope not rats up there :~? Having converted a half derelict cottage in Wales once, I learned my lessons!

Hi Sally, we’ve had a look around the roof space, the timbers look sound but totally untreated so got quite a bit of woodworm. We’ll treat them later, before the insulation goes in next month. We don’t seem to have rats in this roof, but we have in others. But rats have been up there at some stage, so they may move in when it gets colder, not sure. Anyway, we’re on with dealing with the rat problem!

The other precaution with rodents is fibreglass insulation, or so I’ve been told.

We have it on good authority that rats love to make their nests in fibreglass insulation, finding it warm and cosy!

An attic room or loft sounds wonderful!

Hi Margaret, thanks for stopping by! Hope you and Wayne are well. We’ve managed not to fall off yet, and that’s the roof sorted until next spring, so we should be ok! Thanks for your concern 🙂
