Asparuh was the founder of the Bulgarian state, created in 681 with the signing of a peace treaty with the Byzantine Empire. Here he is depicted sticking his sword into the ground, declaring ‘Here is to be Bulgaria, under this sky, on this land’. Behind him is a huge horse, an animal of utmost importance to the nomadic tribes of proto-Bulgaria, and next to him is a dog, their favoured sacrificial animal.
