Todorov Den in Sadina

Posted on 28 February 201504 March 2015

Our friend Ivan invited us to go with him to the Todorov Den horse-racing celebrations in the nearby village of Sadina today, so we have spent a pleasant morning with him and two other friends, watching the racing.

It’s no Aintree 🙂 Groups of four riders raced each other across a grassy field, with a final race to determine first place. Many of the riders raced bareback, and there was not a helmet in sight but nobody fell off, everyone finished and the horses seemed to enjoy the race.

After that two horse-and-cart teams raced each other, which was an impressive sight as they thundered and rattled over the lumpy field. The morning finished with a pulling competition; horses tried to pull a sledge laden with heavy sacks. We didn’t stay to see who won, but they’d got up to pulling 300kg by the time we’d left, impressive pulling power!

It was also just a good day out with your horse, and we saw a lot of lovingly-decorated horses, and carts of all shapes and sizes.

A most enjoyable morning which wasn’t ruined by the slight drizzle.

Hi! Yes, very reminiscent of Cumbrian fairs, but very much not organised as a big event, mainly just a bunch of people with horses meeting for a bit of a shindig.

Winter is mainly over, but apparently March can still bite you in the bum; we’re forecast snow next weekend, and locals say we can still get freezing temperatures even late on.
